Are you a responsible driver?
Being a responsible driver does not only mean having your eyes peeled open and watching the road, or dodging through traffic as defensively as possible. It could also mean that you're concerned about your overall driving experience - starting with the physical condition of your vehicle. Making sure that your car is running properly, through regular car maintenance and checkups, can be the difference between life and death on the road.
Here's a basic checklist for you to look over and follow:
a. Check your oil, your fuel as well as the air in your tires. Make sure the gauges are working fine. If they are broken, have them repaired. Also make sure not to overfill your oil. Due to pressure in the vehicle, this can damage your oil seal and produce massive leaks, which can cause more problems for various parts in your vehicle.
b. Clean your air filters regularly. If your air filters are clogged it can lead to lower or insufficient combustion. This process in turn, increases the pollution produced by your vehicle on the road.
c. Check if your treads are uneven or if your tires need additional air. Make sure to change damaged on worn-out tires, especially if you plan to travel over long distances. Be sure to have an original spare, if you can afford to invest on one. It is never wise to bring a a re-treated spare tire, or even a first-class imitation of the original. These may break easily if you plan to travel over rough roads.
d. If you can afford to do so, have your car checked regularly. Be sure to grease the moving parts of your vehicle to prevent wear and tear from frictions and impacts. Check the parts of your vehicle while your washing it so you can see if you need to remove and replace worn-out pieces.
e. Bring extra tools and a repair kit when you're planning to go on a long trip. Be sure to have the number of your mechanic on speed dial, and always remember to have your vehicle checked before you leave.
